WHY SERVICE LEARNING?

Service Learning transforms education from something students receive into something they live. Hands-on service learning projects don’t just teach—they connect classroom concepts to real-world needs, fostering deeper understanding. Students gain practical skills while developing empathy, civic responsibility, and a sense of purpose. At the same time, they build meaningful connections with the community, creating a cycle of learning and service that benefits everyone involved.

GRANT APPLICATIONS

  • Homegrown projects are designed by you! You select the community issue you want to address, choose a service partner to work with, and create the lesson plans.

  • Ready-to-Go projects are pre-packaged service learning projects developed by STEM Library Lab for schools in the Greater New Orleans area. The service component has been paired with relevant classroom curriculum and is aligned with Louisiana standards.

FORMS FOR AWARD RECIPIENTS

  • Any changes made to a Service Learning Award (i.e. – budget, service partner, or curriculum) must be approved BEFORE the changes are made. Use the form below to request approval of changes.

  • All Service Learning Award recipients must complete an end of project Expenditure Report that summarizes the service learning project and accounts for funds awarded and spent. The 2025-2026 Expenditure, Evaluation and Reflection Report is due within 30 days of project completion but no later than May 2, 2026.

  • Some award recipients have been selected to complete a mid-project report summarizing their project’s progress. For the selected recipients, the report is due before or on Friday, December 8, 2023, unless otherwise stated in the award agreement.

  • Offer valid October 4, 2025 – April 30, 2026 for Service Learning awardee groups underwritten by STEM Library Lab and the Joe W. and Dorothy Dorsett Brown Foundation.
